Synodal Admistration Discusses Orthodox Education for Cossacks

Moscow, June 28, 2010

On June 25, 2010 in the Vysoko-Petrovsky Monastery, Moscow, a working meeting was conducted by Synodal administrative leaders of the Russian Orthodox Church—Bishop Mercury of Zaraisk, the head of the Department of Religious Education and Catechism of the Russian Orthodox Church, and Bishop Kirill of Pavlo-Posadsk, head of the Synodal Committee for cooperative activity with the Cossackry of the Moscow Patriarchate.

Cooperative efforts between these two Synodal departments and perspectives for future development and cooperation were discussed. Also participating in the discussions were Igumen Peter (Ermeev), Rector of the Russian Orthodox Institute of St. John the Theologian, and Hierodeacon Lavrenty (Poleshkevich), head of the Sector of Orthodox Education of the Department of Religious Education and Catechism of the Russian Orthodox Church.

The resolution was made to work out an Orthodox educational component which would reflect the history and culture of Cossackry, in order to introduce such a component into all Cossack Cadet Corps, as well as into other general educational institutes for Cossacks.

Taking into consideration that Orthodoxy is an inalienable part of Cossack culture, issues of sound theological education amongst the Cossackry were discussed, based upon that of the Cossack department of the Russian Orthodox Institute of St. John the Theologian.

It was resolved to create a section on Cossackry at the Annual International Nativity Readings (held in Moscow) within the framework of "Church and Society."
